Fish, whine, whisky and a rouge Hippopotamus

Corporate Fly fishing and Lifestyle weekend at Kloofzicht with Nedbank  Corporate

On the weekend of the 14th and 15th of April we were privileged enough to arrange a fly fishing and lifestyle weekend for 50 Nedbank Corporate Private Clients and staff. The chosen venue was the beautiful Kloofzicht lodge and spa.

After waking up earlier than nature intended for human beings I took the long road to Muldersdrif. After entering the top gate and making my way down the windy road I stopped dead in my tracks- the Lodge was gone!  All one could see was a puffy white cloud where kloofzicht  lodge should be. I have seen the early morning fog rise up from the dams before but on that morning it was particularly majestic.

I was the first of our team to arrive and had to explore. There was a chill in the air and the fog was so thick in some places that you could only see a few meters in front of you. I was enjoying my stroll in the magical world low visibility when it occurred to me that there is “rouge” hippopotamus roaming in the aria. Our last encounter was pleasant but it didn’t change the fact that one of us was a hippo and the other easily breakable (by a hippo) so I took a few pictures and went to prepare for our guests.

The morning’s fishing went well with every guest capable of a decent cast and appetite to catch the biggest fish. The carp were active, we had a few bites and a few fish caught. A nice result considering that most of our guests had never picked up a fly rod in their lives before.  At the end of the morning fishing session we were treated to a fantastic lunch that made myself and others vow to rejoin our eating plan on Monday. The fishing continues after lunch.

For dinner we had arranged a Chivas Regal whisky tasting courtesy of Pernod Ricard. Whilst learning about the whisky making process we were tasting a single malt which you cannot buy! Needless to say a good time was had by all. After a spectacular meal we did our Fly tying presentation and demonstration. Normally I would shy away from any activity that involves whisky, wine and sharp objects but the evening turned out to be a success and it’s a nice feeling when people are in awe of your eye-sight.

The next day the gloves were off! Prizes were at stake and fish would be caught. The hippo even made an appearance and my confidence in the human being’s reasoning ability took a nose dive. There were people (non of our group) fishing with spinners in the small dam that the hippo was swimming in! If that wasn’t enough they had also arranged themselves to block any route the beast might have taken out of the dam! The hippo behaved and all had a good day (except for some fish).

Our final fun activity was a trout cook off with wine pairing. Guests were divided into teams and Kloofzicht’s head chef gave a demonstration on how to prepare a trout. Patty Savage (National Brand Manager of Zewenwacht wine) very kindly presented the wine pairing and sponsored the delicious ZEWENWACHT Tin Roof Sauvignon Blanc. Cooking and a good wine is always a fun combination and jokes were plentiful as the teams prepared their trout. Finally the moment arrived; all trout were proudly displayed and ready to be judged. The judge made it through the sampling of each eager competitors offering and managed to resist a hilarious attempt at bribery. For the first time ever we had duel winners as both the winning teams had unique and inventive takes on preparing their fish (it tasted pretty good to).

And so it was time for us to leave. I can confidently say it was “mission accomplished”. We left content that our efforts were greatly appreciated and with the knowledge all we have learned from this event, we are confident our next one will be even better.

Is your little ones birthday party just around the corner?  Have you considered a fly fishing  party ?

At Magalies Barbus Haven the children will not only have fun in the great outdoors but will also learn the art of fly fishing but also about the local entomology and the lifecycle of insects. The will also enjoy going crab hunting in the river.

We then give them flies and let them fish on the dam till it’s time to eat.

After the kids have eaten we take them to another part of the river where they’ll do crab cashing with chicken bones and string.
